3 Easy Ways To Stop A Freak Out (Immediately)

You’re sitting there, a cup of coffee warming the palms of your hands, staring at a notch in your wood floor that looks like an eye starting up at you. You think, “What if this doesn’t work? What if they say, “No?” Your mind is like a hamster on a wheel, and you can’t stop feeling this sense of frustration, overwhelm and fear about your business.


It’s another day, a new day. You should spring out of bed, excited to get to work. But, you’re not excited. You’re terrified. You're wondering where the money's coming from.


So, what’s next? Do you numb that feeling with a slice of pumpkin pie for breakfast? Do you take a few jabs at your Partner? Do you shut down completely and burry yourself under a personal mountain of blankets?

These aren’t judgement statements. They’re what happens to you when you allow a freak out to hang around for long enough to gain momentum. Like a tiny snowball at the top of a mountain that becomes a boulder as it rolls down the slope.


Do you want to stay there? Do any of us? Well, no of course not!


But…what if that feeling is serving you? What if it’s operating to keep you “safe” from failure? Or being cast out of your family? Or being “too big for your britches?” 


It is in your very nature to expand. To grow. To be bigger and MORE than you were before. When you hold back your natural growth, and hang onto old beliefs about what’s possible for you, you freak out. Spin out. Feel like crap.


And, it sucks. But that's not the whole story.

The beautiful thing is that awareness takes you out of the story and into a place to choose differently.


3 Easy Ways To Stop A Freak Out (Immediately)


1) Ask yourself, “What’s the truth here?”


This is a power question that I’ve heard from many-a-transformational Woman in business (like Elizabeth Purvis and Amira Alvarez). So often, we take our limiting beliefs and stories of fear/lack/scarcity/not enough-ness and make them truth in our minds. This question allows you to take a mental step back and see those thoughts for what they are. 


Once you identify the truth within you that’s connected with light, joy and expansion, speak it over yourself. It feels like letting go of a breath you’ve been holding onto.


2) Change your surroundings


I use this tactic religiously to break a negative pattern of thought. If I notice myself going down the rabbit hole, I get the heck out of where I’m at (if possible). So, I’ll go for a drive, take my work outside or even change rooms. In that new space, especially if I couldn’t access my truth beforehand, I’m able to do so much easier in new surroundings.

If you can’t change your surroundings as far as moving your location, change the atmosphere of your current surroundings. Put on music, flip bright lights on, turn them off and light a candle, do a ten minute speed clean or open the windows. Small transformations of an existing space can help as well.


3) Stop feeding the monster


I don’t know about you, but when I’m upset about something, I tend to roll it over in my mind like a smooth pebble passing from hand to hand. I worry it’s edges, I ask why it’s color is like the sky when it rains. I contemplate cracking it open and seeing they hidden layers.


I like to fix things. And, I like to understand them. Those can be powerful qualities (do you have them too?), but they can also cause you to ENERGIZE the exact opposite of what you want to feel. When you’re freaking out and are truly ready to feel better, so that you can kick butt in your business, you have to decide to cut that crap out.


Tell that fear based thought to shut its mouth. Scream, “NO, that’s not the truth. THIS is the truth” out loud or in your mind every time that thoughts tries to creep back in and hook you again.


When you feel good, you take big action. You ask for the sale. You show up on video. You ROCK IT OUT.
