Bleary eyed from sleep, I padded out into the dew dripped grass in front of my apartment. The lake decidedly calm, as if ignoring the Sun’s invitation to stir and move. My mind felt like it was still surrounded by warm blankets.
I’m not a fan of walking my dogs, but Daniel was already out and about for the day.
The night prior, I stumbled across Gabby Bernstein’s Super Soul Sunday video on YouTube. She went on about control, surrender and knowing that “The Universe has your back.”
One of her steps of surrendering was asking for a sign. She’d been struggling with infertility for a year, fought to control it and then finally surrendered. After doing so, she peered out her window, watching a group of wild turkeys for about thirty minutes. After, during meditation, she heard, “Google the spiritual meaning of Turkeys.” So, she did.
It popped up, “Fertility.”
That’s beautiful, isn’t it? And, how often do we wonder if we’re on the right path, or if we’re ever going to reach/achieve/receive our desires? If we’re doing it all “wrong?”
I’m guessing often enough to keep reading. I decided, in the moment I heard Gabby’s sign, that I was going to ask for one as well.
You see, my life has changed RAPIDLY since the start of 2017. From my Husband being laid off, to my business growing and evolving, to my self-image shifting and expanding…nothing has stayed the same. Not much has been certain, and I’m someone who craves “safety.”
So, looking down at my bare feet in the crunchy, morning grass (I always check for spiders flitting about), I noticed something.
A dragonfly lifted away from the path of my feet and flew to join his friends.
A group of dragonflies hovered languidly above the bushes in front of me. They seemed to be just as sleepy as me, and I thought, “Look at those lazy Dragonflies,” immediately followed by, “I should look up the spiritual meaning of Dragonflies.”
Then, of course, my conscious mind thought, “Ummm, that was WAY too easy, Jess. You can’t just make up your own sign from the first thing that catches your eye.”
I’m glad I didn’t listen to that, because I went inside and googled despite my skepticism.
"The dragonfly spiritually embodies the stripping away of negativity that holds us back, helping us to achieve our dreams and goals. Dragonflies are the keepers of dreams, the energy within that sees all of our true potential and ability. Dragonflies inspire spiritually and creatively, they help us on the path of discovery and enlightenment. The remind us anything is possible…The dragonfly, in almost every part of the world symbolizes change and change in the perspective of self realization; and the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life"
Tears pricked my eyes. These are words for me, but they’re also words for you. So often in my coaching I see the birth of dreams, the realization of desires and the battle between our truest selves and the self that we hold onto out of fear. Ya' know what I'm talking about, right?
My journey has been one of becoming. Just like the dragonfly, who starts out in the water and then learns to fly, I challenge you to look inward and ask yourself where you’re holding back from taking flight.
And, know this.
It’s safe for you to change.
